A Comprehensive Energy System Retrofit Workflow Applied to a Bulk Carrier
The transition towards sustainable maritime operation
presents a multifaceted challenge, as technological, economic,
environmental and safety-related factors are deeply intercon-
nected. This paper presents an integrated simulation workflow
for retrofitting alternative energy systems on existing ships.
The workflow comprises individual research fields like an
in-depth analysis of AIS Data, Energy system analysis including
a comparison of its total cost of ownership (TCO), wind-assisted
ship propulsion (WASP), as well as a naval architecture eval-
uation, which elaborates a feasible integration. The applica-
tion of the workflow is presented in a preliminary case study to
showcase its capabilities. The integrated AIS analysis selects a
35.000 DWT bulk carrier as the test case. In the energy sys-
tem analysis, the bulk carrier is equipped with a methanol two
stroke combustion engine and WASP systems. Accordingly, a
preliminary design of the new energy system is developed and
additional required safety systems are identified. The resulting
energy system is integrated into the vessel and evaluated regard-
ing ship safety and hydrostatics. The TCO is evaluated based on
(i) the AIS-analysis and (ii) the preliminary ship design. Both are
benchmarked against the baseline TCO with the regulatory costs
that the vessel would be subject to without a retrofit. The case
study reveals the impacts of energy system retrofits on ship design
and demonstrates how a combined approach enables a compre-
hensive decision support in sustainable maritime retrofitting
