Theoretical Analysis on Temperature Distribution in Hollow Cylinder Heated by External Surface Source
Mechanically Lined Pipe (MLP) is a double-walled pipe comprising a carbon steel outer with a thin layer of Corrosion Resistance Alloy (CRA) fitted internally. This CRA layer serves to safeguard the outer pipe against corrosive agents presented in O&G flow internally. Meanwhile, coating, applied after pipe fabrication, is employed to achieve long-term protection against mechanical damage and corrosion externally. It is a well-known phenomenon that the residual contact pressure generated by previous hydroforming process can be significantly erased after external coating. The pre-heating process used to melt the resin sprayed on MLP outer surface heats the pipe outer wall to an approximate temperature of 240℃. The thermal stress induced by this heating temperature field is considered a key factor in understanding the mechanism by which coating weakens the MLP mechanical bonding. Therefore, preliminary research on temperature distribution is of necessity for subsequent accurate thermal stress description. During pre-heating, an annular furnace applies constant heat flux to the axially translated MLP until its surface reaches the target temperature. This study formulates the heating process as an axisymmetric, quasi-stationary transient problem of a finite-length circumferential heating source advancing along a hollow cylinder. An analytical solution for the temperature distribution is obtained using the Finite Hankel Transform (FHT) and compared with Numerical simulation results.
