80590 - Peridynamic Analysis of Floating Ice Under Transverse Pressure
Due to the tremendous demand for energy, the exploration of the offshore oil field is prevailing across the world. In this view, one of the primary sites of interest is the Arctic region. But, due to extreme climatic conditions, designing a structure withstanding harsh environmental loads is a significant challenge. Specifically, avoiding failure due to the sudden impact of Ice floe requires a detailed study of ice-structure interaction. The most widely accepted technique for performing structural analysis is the Finite Element Method. Still, for ice structure due to its material properties, FEM seems quite challenging while dealing with cracks. Although many advanced techniques have been introduced, such as the cohesive zone method (CZM) and extended finite element method for modeling crack propagation. Since these methods are based on classical continuum mechanics, being a local theory, it cannot treat cracks as an integral part of the structure. To overcome this drawback, Silling(2000) introduced non-continuum mechanics, i.e., Peridynamics, which reformulates the governing equation by replacing spatial derivatives with integrals. It assumes that the body is discretized into material points and connected through bonds with each other. The internal force acting on each point depends on the collective deformation of all points located within the horizon. The main advantage of the novel theory is incorporating damage in the governing equation. The equation consists of integrals which represent the summation of all bond forces acting at a point. So the broken bond represents a discontinuity in the structure whose bond force is taken as zero. In this way, the reformulated governing equation is valid for cracks without treating it as an external criterion. The detailed peridynamic formulation of floating ice is presented by Vazic et al., 2020, by considering it as a Mindlin plate resting on the Winkler foundation. Our work aims to model ice structure in a peridynamic framework, and under impact loads, the crack propagation is studied by this novel theory.
