78638 - Approach to Simulate Fluid-Structure Interaction of a Ship in 3-Dimensional Numerical Towing Tank
In the present study, in order to investigate structural response of ships including whipping and springing, a new approach to simulate fluid structure interaction (FSI) of a ship in three dimensional numerical water tank using ICFD (Incompressible computational fluid dynamics) methodology is explored. ICFD (Incompressible computational fluid dynamics) is the state of the art methodology to simulate both structure and incompressible fluid using finite element method (FEM) where both are modeled with Lagrange mesh with relatively rapid computation time.
As a case study, slamming impact of bow flare of container ships is demonstrated in details. A numerical simulation of water entry of bow flare into the water is carried out and behavior of surrounding water around bow flare is investigated in details. The scope, status and limitation of the present technology especially from the view point of investigating structural response of ships is discussed. Further navigation of a container ship in regular waves in 3-diensional numerical water tank is shortly demonstrated and discussed.
Finally ongoing project of simulation of an elastic-plastic container ship in regular waves in numerical water tank is shortly introduced using a whole container ship model. The utilization of the present technology toward future digital twin concept is shortly discussed.
