79165 - Numerical Analysis of the Efficiency of Corroded Pressure Vessels With Composite Repair
The use of composite materials has been increasing in the last decades. Given the numerous advantages generally achieved with composite materials, industries such as aerospace and automotive have been using these materials almost since their creation. More recently, other sectors have also been appropriating these benefits and assimilating this technology. One of these sectors refers to the use of composite materials for repair of other structures. Mainly the oil, petrochemical and maritime industries have been increasingly using these materials in the repair of metal pipes and pressure vessels, since composites have greater corrosion resistance, faster repair, more economical and safer. This article is part of a research project that aims to perform a correlation of numerical-experimental results that will allow the development of a numerical tool capable of simulating various conditions (geometric and material) of analysis of repair efficiency in corroded regions of pressure vessels. This paper brings the numerical model of a small-scale pressure vessel repaired with composite material, developed with the aid of the commercial software ABAQUS®. The numerical results show the efficiency of repairs using composite material, even when they are close to stress concentration regions. The importance of this work for the oil & gas sector is about providing a greater degree of safety for the pressure vessel operating companies in relation to the repair of such equipment.
