Study on Load Reduction Devices for Mooring Systems of Large Semi-Submersible Photovoltaic Platforms
With the continuous development of the offshore photovoltaic (PV) industry, large-scale semi-submersible PV platforms are becoming a promising solution for marine-based renewable energy generation. The performance and stability of such platforms heavily depend on the design of their mooring systems, particularly in mitigating extreme and fatigue loads caused by environmental forces. Load reduction devices (LRDs), which have shown success in offshore wind applications, offer a promising way to dampen dynamic loads through nonlinear load-extension characteristics. Despite their potential, their application in offshore PV platforms is still limited, with most previous studies focusing on optimizing single performance parameters. This paper presents a more holistic approach to the design of mooring systems by simultaneously considering extreme line tensions and cumulative fatigue damage, under constraints of acceptable platform offsets. Focusing on a reference large-scale semi-submersible PV platform, the study investigates the impact of different load reduction devices on both single-platform and multi-platform configurations, where multiple platforms share a common mooring system. The effects of water depth and mooring radius on the performance of these devices are analyzed in detail. Furthermore, the load distribution and inter-platform interactions are evaluated to assess system-wide performance and structural integrity. The results provide insights into the optimization of mooring strategies for large-scale offshore PV farms, with a focus on improving long-term reliability and cost-effectiveness.
