A Performance-Matched Rotor Reconstruction Approach for Floater Design of Floating Wind Turbines
The rapid growth of renewable energy, particularly offshore wind energy, has heightened the need for reliable floating wind turbines (FWTs). A significant barrier for floater designer is the lack of wind turbine models from manufacturers, which hinders accurate aerodynamic assessment and the integrated design of floating platforms. This study introduces a performance-matched rotor reconstruction method that enables the creation of a wind turbine model consistent with target aerodynamic performance to address this challenge. Based on publicly available wind turbine models, the proposed approach leverages scaling theory to establish an initial wind turbine configuration aligned with target aerodynamic characteristics, followed by a gradient-based correction procedure to optimize blade chord and twist distributions for enhanced aerodynamic accuracy. The methodology is verified through the reconstruction of the IEA 10 MW wind turbine, using the NREL 5 MW reference model as a baseline. Comparative analyses demonstrate that the reconstructed wind turbine closely matches the rotor performance of the reference design, with deviations maintained within acceptable limits. These findings underscore the proposed method’s efficacy and its potential to advance the design and analysis of FWTs, providing reliable wind turbine models to support floater design and coupling analyses, thereby supporting the broader adoption of offshore wind energy.
