Influence of Diameters in Double Heave Plates on Hydrodynamic Coefficients Under Constant Material Usage
Addressing the need for improved heave stability in floating structures, this study investigates the hydrodynamic performance of double heave plates under wave-induced motions. Heave plates are traditionally used to enhance stability by generating added mass and damping through vortex shedding at their sharp edges. In multi-plate configurations, the design parameters, specifically spacing and relative size, critically determine the resulting hydrodynamic characteristics.
We employed a combined approach of experimental measurements and validated numerical simulations using OpenFOAM to systematically analyze the double heave plate system under forced oscillations. The OpenFOAM framework demonstrated high accuracy, with simulation results typically deviating from experimental measurements by less than $5\%$ for added mass and $10\%$ for damping.
The investigation revealed that plate size significantly influences added mass, with certain double-plate configurations unexpectedly showing a reduction in added mass compared to a single plate. Furthermore, the spacing between the plates had a pronounced, nonlinear effect on hydrodynamic damping. This nonlinearity is attributed to the vortex interaction between the two plates, which becomes increasingly complex and influential as the gap between them is reduced. These findings highlight the necessity of optimizing multi-plate geometries to avoid adverse effects and ensure maximum performance gain in enhancing the stability of floating structures.
