CFD-FEM Analysis of Water Entry of an Elastic Stiffened Wedge in Waves
Water entry of bow structures is one important method to study the local slamming loads and structure response. However, most existing studies focus on water entry of rigid structures in still water, while research on the coupled response mechanisms of elastic structures remains limited, particularly in waves. The CFD-FEM model of an elastic wedge section, a two-way coupled fluid-structure interaction method, is developed to predict slamming loads and structure response. The water entry of the bow flare structures designed for the 20000TEU ultra-large container ship in large waves are simulated. In the CFD-FEM coupled method, the fluid domain is solved using OpenFOAM with overset mesh and the VOF method, while the structural response is simulated with CalculiX using the eight-node continuum shell element. Data exchange is achieved via the multi-physics coupling tool preCICE, ensuring strong coupling through multiple data transfers per time step. The wave is simulated with the overInterDyMFoam solver, which combines the incompressible two-phase solver interFoam with dynamic overset technology. The numerical model is validated against published free-drop test results in still water, showing good agreement in pressure and stress responses. The effects of wave height and phase on slamming loads and structural responses are predicted and analyzed. The proposed two-way coupling method effectively predicts the hydro-elastic response characteristics of elastic structures under wave-entry slamming conditions.
