Finite Element Modelling of Flexible Pipe Under Cyclic Radial Crushing
An unbonded, flexible pipe riser that had been in hibernation for a time was tested under radial crushing loads using four V-shaped shoes. The tested flexible pipe sample only preserved the interlocker and polymer layers. This pipe underwent 15 loading cycles. After each cycle, the internal ovality was measured using laser tracker technology, and the ovality curve as a function of axis length was obtained. The cycling loads were divided into three levels: 24 Ton-f/m, 30 Ton-f/m, and 50 Ton-f/m. A crushing load was applied in three steps: the first load was from preload to load in 3.5 minutes, followed by a 10-minute hold, and then unloading in 3.5 minutes. In this paper, a numerical model of the B31OS beam element type was built using a simplified cross-section. The simplified section was obtained from the measured carcass section, while maintaining the inertia properties. This section follows a helical geometry with a pitch of 14.9 mm. Analytical surfaces were modeled to represent V-shoes. During the analysis, loading cycles were modeled, and numerical ovality was measured and compared with experimental ovality. The study evaluated different positions of fixed shoes, spring coefficient for longitudinal stiffeners, and the isotropic and kinematic behavior of the material. A finite element model was built in Abaqus software with an implicit solver, and non-linearities were considered
