The Investigation of Energy Exchange Characteristics of the Ice-Flexible Plate System Under Normal and Oblique Direction Compression Experiments
Ice impacts on structures are highly common, particularly for polar vessels navigating in ice-covered waters. Such impacts can lead to structural failure, potentially resulting in severe consequences. Model testing allows for the intuitive investigation of physical laws within a controlled environment, thereby providing a basis for the design and optimization of structures. In this paper, the energy exchange characteristics between an ice cube and flexible plate are investigated by experiment. Both the normal and oblique compression experiments of an square-column-shaped ice cube to a flexible plate were conducted. The compression forces and the plate deformation/strain were measured during the compression. The vibration mode shape superposition method was employed to fit the bent deflection surface of the plate. The ice elastic energy, plate strain energy and the dissipated energy by ice breaking were calculated and analyzed based on reproduced results. It is found that the stiffness ratio has a significant impact on the energy exchange during the compression. The critical value of stiffness ratio under normal and oblique conditions were discussed. The ice breaking feature and the corresponding compressing force during the compression will also show different breaking patterns. The different breaking patterns of ice samples can account for the characteristics of energy variations and the changes in ice load.
