An International Collaborative Academic Program Experience on the Topic of Risers and Pipelines for Offshore Engineering Education and Research
This paper presents the Brazil-Japan Collaborative Education Program on Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering (BJCEP), an international collaboration initiative on academic teaching and research at graduate level led by the U. of Tokyo. Specifically, here, we focus on the course on “Risers and Pipelines”, offered by Unicamp and UFRJ to the members of the program. BJCEP was started in 2016, with important support from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan (MEXT), spanning four Japanese universities, five Brazilian universities, as well as interactions with other universities and the industry in the partners’ countries, and it is still in activity in 2026. The course is taught in English simultaneously for all students, in the three countries, through live remote classes, broadcasted by videoconference tools, with academic resources and classes activities managed by an internet webpage content tool. Students with better performances often benefit from internships or international interchange activities. The BJCEP not only provided an advanced level of education to the students, but also fostered new relationships on professional international networking, while also strengthening previous bonds. The classes benefitted the students in terms of curricular completion, or as a basis for support to their degree dissertation or thesis. A brief history of BJCEP is laid out within the context of the experience of collaboration between universities, followed by a description of the teaching and research practice in risers and pipelines, including activities, infrastructure, schedules, syllabus, attendance, challenges, solutions and results.
