Effect of Tide, Wave, Storm Surge and Seismic Intensity on Deepwater Breakwater Design for Indian Ports
The design of deepwater breakwater in about 18m water depth along east and west coast of India depends on tide, wave, storm surge and seismic intensity. The effect of the tide, wave and storm surge is found to increase the top level of the breakwater from +7.5m on the east coast to +15m on the west coast. The wave height of about 4-5m has resulted to keep the tow level at 1.5Hs instead of 2Hs resulting in lesser cost. The top level at bends require additional 1m height of top level. The armour units volume increases from 4cubic meter to 11cum when the wave height increases from 4m to 7m. The seaside slope of 1:1.33 is found to be safe as seismic intensity increases, whereas the Lee side slope has to be revised from 1:1.5 to 1:2. The settlement of the deepwater breakwater are within the 1% limit of height of breakwater based on the finite element analysis and field observations. The core gradation using 10kg to 500 kg is compared with theoretical distribution and is found to be within tolerance limits of 5-10%.
The design of breakwater using theoretical methods and model study, slope stability and settlement analysis using Plaxis and core gradation as per CIRIA manual are compared for three breakwaters in same water depth of 18-19m subject to varying tide, wave, storm surge and seismic intensity are presented in this paper.
