An Experimental Investigation on Vortex-Induced Vibration of an “M” Shaped Jumper Under Out-Of-Plane Uniform Flow
Abstract: Deep-water development fields generally employ subsea production systems, in which the subsea jumper serves as an essential element, mainly providing an interface between the subsea tree and subsea manifold or other subsea infrastructure. As subsea jumpers are normally composed of significant free spans, they are susceptible to obvious vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) under the action of the seabed flow field, leading to fast accumulation of fatigue damage. The complex geometric configuration of the subsea jumper implies that the VIV excitation directions of its local segments will be different, resulting in extremely complex VIV responses. To investigate the cross-flow (CF) and in-line (IL) VIV response characteristics of the subsea jumper, a VIV model test of a scaled “M” shaped jumper under out-of-plane uniform flow was carried out, and strain data under different flow velocity conditions were analyzed. Experimental results indicate that the dominant frequencies of VIVs in IL and CF directions exhibit a frequency ratio of 4, which differs from that observed for the single riser. Furthermore, within the true reduced velocity range of Vr = 1.5-3.5, the response of the “M” shaped jumper model is primarily dominated by IL VIV, whereas in the range of Vr = 5-7.5, it is mainly dominated by CF VIV.
