122581 - Development of Environmental Countours for Ice Drift and Wind Speed
The purpose of this study is to develop environmental contours for ice drift and wind speed. The drift of sea ice is naturally influenced by various external forces, including wind stress at the air-ice boundary, water stress at the water-ice boundary, the Coriolis force, pressure gradients caused by sea surface tilting, and internal stress within the sea ice itself. Typically, sea ice will drift at a rate of approximately 2–3% of the wind speed, measured at a height of 10 meters above the ocean surface in Arctic regions. The Nansen number, which corresponds to the magnitude of the wind speed, can be used to estimate the ice drift speed. This research investigates the relationship between wind speed and ice drift speed and applies it to generate environmental contours. Ice drift data for this study are collected through local subsurface measurements using acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCP) in the Beaufort Sea. The distributions of wind speed and ice drift speed are studied, and the effects of the correlation between wind speed and ice drift speed are investigated. Subsequently, the environmental contours demonstrate the relationship between wind speed and ice drift speed. This provides valuable insights into the probabilistic nature of the relationship between wind speed and ice drift speed.
