129289 - Experimental Investigation of the Wave Loads on a Heave Plate With Tilt Angle
An experimental campaign targeting the evaluation of the wave loads acting on a free-surface piercing circular cylinder with a circular heave plate mounted at the bottom with a heave plate is presented in the paper. The horizontal and vertical wave loads are measured by a force transducer mounted on the bottom of a specifically designed beam.
Numerous tests were performed with several sizes of heave plates, with a disk-to-column ratio from 1 up to 3.5. A secondary objective of the campaign is to identify the effect of the draft on the loads. Different types of tests are performed: diffraction, radiation and combined. Regular and irregular waves are used in the test with various wave steepnesses.
The methodology to retrieve added mass and damping from the loads measured in the tests will be presented, and some important results will be presented with a specific focus on the effect of the tilt angle on the loads.
Installing a heave plate is a practical solution to reduce the responses of a floating system. In the case of a wind turbine, the platform is often tilted by the wind effect on the structure. A discussion is done on how the tilt angle affects the typical hydrodynamic coefficients used in the time domain solvers in the presence of heave plates.
