124197 - 3d Numerical Simulation of Local Scour Around the Piles of Guandu Bridge
This study investigates local scour phenomena by employing a three-dimensional numerical model termed the Discontinuous Bi-viscous Model (DBM). The study centers on the Guandu Bridge in northern Taiwan, a pivotal transportation nexus linking the Bali District of New Taipei City with the Beitou District of Taipei City. Over the past 50 years, the riverbed terrain has undergone significant alterations. Historical records of river bathymetry indicate pronounced local scour issues, especially near the midstream piers of the bridge.
To delve into this scouring problem, we utilize the Discontinuous Bi-viscous Model (DBM), a computational framework derived from the three-dimensional incompressible flow model Splash3D. The Splash3D model employs the PLIC method (Piecewise Linear Interface Construction) and the Volume of Fluid Method to solve the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible flow. Additionally, it utilizes Large Eddy Simulation to describe turbulent effects. While retaining the abovementioned features, DBM further incorporates essential rheological characteristics for simulating non-Newtonian fluids, including mudflow, landslide, and local scour.
The study comprises three main facets: Firstly, model validation is conducted by comparing large-scale fixed-bed simulation results with in-situ measurements to examine model accuracy of fluid field. Secondly, the rheological features within DBM are enabled and validated against both analytical solutions and experimental data. Finally, local-scale moving-bed simulations are performed to scrutinize the local scour patterns around each bridge pier. Through these analyses, this research aims to enhance our understanding of local scour phenomena and contribute valuable insights for safeguarding critical infrastructures.
