130261 - The Depth-Dependent Wave-Current Interaction Model With a Porous Layer
In this article, a three-dimensional wave-current interaction model with a porous layer of variable thickness is developed. As the dissipation of the porous layer results in a complex-valued group velocity, Hsu et al. (2018) consider the wave energy propagates at the real-part value of the complex-valued group velocity. However, it lacks physical explanations and results in an empirical coefficient in the energy dissipation term of the phase-averaged wave model. In this study, we follow Mellor’s theory (2008) of the depth-dependent wave-current interaction model for water waves over impermeable seabed to include a porous layer. In the derivation, the solutions are decomposed into wave and current parts. In the wave part, the eigenfunction, obtained from potential theory of linear waves over water and porous layers, is used. Subsequentially, the wave-average procedure is applied. As a result, explicit formulas for the real-valued group velocity, radiation stress, drift velocity, and energy dissipation with a porous layer are obtained. The theory will be implemented into the WWM (wind wave model) coupled with an ocean current model. To validate the theory, some numerical studies were performed. Comparisons with experiments and other numerical results indicated that the proposed model could be applied to waves propagating over porous beds and reefs.

Presenting Author Biography: Chia-Cheng Tsai obtained his B.S. degree of civil engineering from National Taiwan University in 1997 and Ph.D. degree of civil engineering - hydraulic division from National Taiwan University in 2002. He joined Department of Marine Environmental Engineering, National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology, Taiwan, as an assistant professor in 2009 and became a full professor and the department chair in 2012. In 2016, he visited Griffith University, Australia for a half year. As joint appointments, he also worked in National Cheng Kung University from 2014 to 2017 and National Sun Yat-sen University from 2016 to 2012. In 2021, he moved to National Taiwan Ocean University as the director of Center of Excellence for Ocean Engineering and became distinguished professor and Chair of Bachelor Degree Program in Ocean Engineering and Technology in 2022. He has published more than 100 SCI papers.
