125568 - Effect of Forward Speed on Hydrodynamic Responses and Structural Responses of a Benchmark Vessel
This study first validates the Ranine source model with experimental data extracted from the literature, subsequently, utilizes the model to calculate the 6-DOF motion responses and global loads of a benchmark vessel KVLCC2 at various forward speeds (0.0 knot, 5.0 knots, 10.0 knots, 15.5 knots). The effect of forward speed on hydrodynamic responses is evaluated by comparing the long-term extreme responses of 6-DOF motions at the COG and global loads along the ship length. There is a notable increasing trend of surge motion and yaw motion as forward speed increases. Whereas the pitch motion demonstrates the opposite tendency. The influence of forward speed on other motion modes seems to be negligible. As for the global loads, the impact of forward speed on vertical shear forces and vertical bending moments is not significant. While the horizontal shear forces, horizontal bending moments and torsional moments show downward trend with an increment of forward speed. Finally, this paper conducts global FE analyses of KVLCC2 at zero forward speed and design speed (15.5 knots). The comparisons of the stress responses of typical structural members at two forward speeds indicate that the effect of forward speed on structural responses does not show a consistent trend in different wave headings.
