127817 - Integration of a Novel Wave Power Generation Into Vehicle Charging System
The main contributor to the global warming crisis is greenhouse gases which are a consequence of air pollution. Since fossil fuel-based road transportation represents 3/4th of the worlds emissions, there is a pressing need to efficiently transition to Electrical Vehicles (EVs) to maintain a healthier environment. Yet, to accelerate EV adoption, improving infrastructure with reliable and stable renewable energy sources like wave energy is essential for efficient transition to EVs. This project aims to exploit sustainable energy from the sea waves to charge EVs. The key focus of the study is the innovative use of Oscillating Body Wave Energy Converter (OBWEC) technology; an emerging sustainable energy harvesting technique which capitalizes on wave motion to generate electricity. In this project, a multiple-panel plate, rotating about a horizontal axis that is perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation, will be designed. Therefore, energy will be collected from the relative motion of the body, driven by the horizontal motion of waves (surge), to the fixed point. In this paper, the design requirements, specifications, and constraints will be explored, along with the optimization of energy conversion and the minimization of environmental impact. Furthermore, the integration challenges and strategies of embedding the wave power generator into the existing vehicle charging system will be scrutinized. Accordingly, the technical and environmental challenges that have traditionally been associated with wave energy conversion can be significantly mitigated by the new design structure of OBWEC along with an appropriate integration strategy. This research will foster a better utilization of renewable energy resources and will pave a path for the future development and refinement of wave energy technology in electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
