126059 - Hydrodynamic Characteristics of Heave Plates in Shallow Water Using Forced Oscillation
Heave plates which are widely deployed at the bottom of floating offshore structures can effectively reduce the motion and improve the stability of structures by providing the additional added mass and damping. These hydrodynamic parameters are strongly affected by the proximity of solid boundaries in shallow water. In the present work, the variations of added mass and damping as the heave plates move a flat terrain and a stepped terrain are investigated. A column with a solid circular heave plate (similar to the offset column of DeepCwind platform) are simulated in a numerical wave tank which are built by a high-fidelity tool (Computational Fluid Dynamics, CFD) using forced oscillation tests in calm water. The added mass and damping coefficients of heave plate are determined by fitting time series of the calculated force and moment to Morison's equation with a least squares procedure. The hydrodynamic coefficients of heave plates with varying distance between heave plates and a flat terrain in shallow water are analyzed and compared with the estimated coefficients in deep water. Furthermore, the influence of the width and length of a stepped terrain on the hydrodynamic characteristics of heave plates are investigated with a constant distance between the top of terrain and the bottom of heave plate.
