A Numerical Simulation of Ship Self-Propulsion Used Modified Body Force Method Based on Wake
In the numerical prediction of ship speed and maneuverability, compared with the real propeller, the body force method has the advantages of high computational efficiency and simple mesh system. In this paper, a modified descriptive body force method based on wake is proposed, and the self-propulsion of a full-scale KCS container ship is simulated. In this method, the open water curve modified by the nominal wake is used as the input of the body force source term, which is distributed to the cylindrical discrete body through the Goldstein optimization method, and the ship self-propulsion simulation is directly carried out in combination with the momentum equation. The simulation uses an in-house computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solver based on the unsteady Reynolds Average Navier-Stokes (URANS) method and an in-house overset code combined with the two-degree-of-freedom(2DOF) motion equation is applied to solve the ship motion. Firstly, the verification of grid and time step is verified for KCS resistance in calm water. The resistance and ship motions obtained by simulation are compared with the test results and the error is less than 5 %. Then, the nominal wake obtained by simulation is used to modify the descriptive body force source term, which is used to simulate the self-propulsion of KCS. The results show that compared with the results of the traditional descriptive body force method, the descriptive body force method based on the wake greatly improves the accuracy of the self-propulsion factor obtained by the simulation. The differences between the CFD results and the test results are less than 5 %.
