127097 - A Literature Survey of Probabilistic Modelling Methods of Local Ice Loads on Marine Structures
Ships and offshore structures in the cold regions are designed to resist heavy loading incurred by ice. The failure of ice is a complex process involving randomly formed high pressure zones and intermittent spalling, shearing and flexural failure. Extensive stochasticity also exists in the ice environment and operational modes of ships. This reflects the necessity to understand the stochasticity in ice loads and to establish probabilistic models to make predictions on ice loads. Investigations on the statistical feature and probabilistic modelling have been carried out since decades ago, but the amount of work is relatively scarce comparing to other topics of ice engineering. This paper reviews the existing work on the probabilistic modelling of ice loads on marine structures, with the main purpose of concluding the current status and offering suggestions for future work. Existing methods for the probabilistic modelling of ice loads on marine structures are divided into mechanics driven and data driven methods. The frameworks of the two different methodologies are formed and analysed. The key difference lies in the role of mechanics and the utilization of full-scale measurement data. The methods falling into these two categories are reviewed and analysed, which lays the foundation to suggest future work.
