127268 - The Effect of the Free Surface on a Full-Scale Submarine in Real Sea Waves Conditions With Different Depths
In this study, the effect of the free surface on the resistance and propulsion performances of a full-scale submarine was analyzed at various depths (d/D=1.1, 2.2, 3.3) in real sea areas off the east coast of Korea. For this analysis, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, open-source field operator and manipulator (OpenFOAM) was utilized to carry out the CFD analysis of the submarine. Additionally, the volume of fluid (VOF) method was used to perform the analysis of multi-phase flow where the free surface was present, and waves2Foam a solver within OpenFOAM was used to show the propagation of waves. A generic submarine Joubert BB2 was selected which was operated by the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands (MARIN). To comprehend the influence of the free surface on the submarine in actual maritime conditions, the analysis was conducted using the full-scale submarine length of 70.2m. Since the waves in the actual sea areas are fundamentally irregular and comprised of component waves propagating in multiple directions, this was considered in the analysis by simulating irregular waves where several component waves were overlapped. Under such wave conditions, the resistance analysis of the submarine was carried out according to the different depths. Also, the hydrodynamic characteristics such as pressure, velocity, and vorticity were compared to verify the influence of the free surface. As a result, this study confirmed that the free surface has a significant impact on the resistance and propulsion performance of the submarine. These results suggest that the effect of the free surface at various depths must be considered in the design and operation process of the submarine.
