105113 - Study of the Influence of Microwave Irradiation on Hard Formation Property Alteration Through Nondestructive/destructive Tests and Drilling/coring Operations
Drilling and Coring Rate Of Penetration (D-ROP and C-ROP, respectively) is a high concern for oil/gas and mining companies with respect to reducing the consumed time in drilling and coring and, as a sequence, lowering the ultimate cost in reaching hydrocarbon reservoirs through drilling, evaluating reservoir formation through coring, and extracting minerals through mining operations. It has been reported that ROP can be positively influenced depending on how optimally the drilling/coring parameters are applied and controlled, where the status of formations being drilled/cored remains constant. In this research, drilling and coring ROP (D-ROP and C-ROP) are evaluated by altering the status of the formations being drilled/cored by the use of Microwave Irradiation (MI) while the applied parameters are kept constant. Unlike published works, this research collectively investigates the influence of MI on D-ROP and C-ROP of hard formation providing confirmation on rock property alteration through nondestructive tests including (ultrasonic wave velocities measurement, abrasivity test) and destructive tests including (Indirect tensile test, and unconfined compressive test). Results showed gradual alteration in rock properties as per MI exposure time. Such alteration has been investigated through obtained from results of nondestructive and destructive tests as well as through drilling/coring results. Outcomes also show rock strength and abrasively reduction due to MI, which influences increase of D-ROP and C-ROP.
