Digital Twin Synchronization Problem on Dynamic Positioning Systems Through Position Matching Strategy
The Digital Twin concept became increasingly widespread, especially in recent years, with a plethora of implementations even when delimiting its scope to the offshore field: entire oil production plants, internal power transmission subsystems, fluid flow control, etc. All of them with different maturity levels and degrees of integration with their real counterparts. Yet, a major problematic is usually unsolved: how to handle the synchronization of the digital model with its physical object. Due to differences caused by modeling inaccuracies or unmodeled disturbances, both would naturally diverge given the exact same input if no further action is taken.
This work proposes a strategy to tackle this problem by applying a correction to one variable in order to force the digitalized value to match its measured one, compelling both models towards a synchronized state per se, concomitantly allowing access to other internal state variables of the Digital Twin Model.
A study case of a Digital Twin for a Dynamic Positioned vessel is presented, with one model representing a real asset, while another the Digital Twin. The positioning is the corrected variable, while the allocation forces are where the mismatch is located. Nonetheless, as the actual thrust is known, the difference between the Digital Twin and the Physical asset is essentially a metric for modeling accuracy.
