Study on the Robust Design of Small Surface Catamaran for Power Endurance
With the importance of small-scale green energy vessels in the maritime market growing, we focus on designing the robust design of a small catamaran and hybrid power systems. In this study, one solar panel (340 W) and lithium-ion battery (12V, 15Ah) were applied to be hybrid power to enhance endurance and operational flexibility. Meanwhile, this study applied the study methods included the design of experiment (DOE), Taguchi orthogonal array (L27), analysis of variance (ANOVA), artificial neural network (ANN), and particle swarm optimization (PSO), etc. For this case study, chosen the three controllable factors with three levels, such as angle of solar panel, navigation path, and sailing duration. There were two outdoor fields to test and measure at water channel in CCIT and lake. The results showed that the main factor of sailing duration had a significant influence on power system performance, about 53.02%. A robust design for the small surface catamaran was achieved by setting the solar panel angle to 17.22°, following a 10 m square-loop path, and sailing duration for 60 minutes. Overall, the results improve the design and operational efficiency of small surface catamarans and provide practical references for the future development of small-scale green energy vessels.
